Grandpa’s Cheese Barn

Next time you are in North East Ohio, there is a roadside attraction that you should make sure to see. Just off of highway I71 in Ashland Ohio you will find the amazing:

I am a big fan of cheese and when I saw the sign for this place I knew I had to stop and see what it was all about. It surely did not disappoint. When I first went there was a big parking lot and an old barn that had a ground floor full of nick nacks. The real magic was when you went upstairs. Glorious amounts of cheese all around, taste tests galore, pickled everything, jellies, honey, pretzels, and more.

Ever since then I make sure that I drive that way when I head West, even if it means tacking on more time to the trip. They are continually expanding too. There is now a chocolate shop, and what look like some cottages, a lake, and even a gazebo. I even got to meet Grandpa once when I was there.

One time I even bought some Limburger. I had never had it before and was pretty much daring myself to try it. I brought it home and left it in the fridge while I got enough guts to try it. Finally, weeks later I was ready. Inspecting the package I learned that Limburger cheese ages and gets stinkier and more intense the longer you wait… Doing the math it would seem that I had waited just long enough to make the cheese enter the “for limburger lovers ONLY” category.

— If you are going to do something, you might as well do it right. —

I got some crackers ready, braced myself, and opened up the package. What happened next can only be described as my body refusing to follow the commands of my mind. I couldn’t bring myself to put it in my mouth. I love stinky cheese, but this smelled like feces. I wrapped it in two sealed plastic bags and threw it in the trash. Don’t get me wrong, I am a little upset about this. I still haven’t tried it. But … I will be driving past Grandpa’s Cheese Barn on Monday …………

— I’ve always said I will try anything twice. Once to see if I like it and a second time to make sure…. —

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

For the first time ever I have seen something somewhere that acknowledges the order of these words. It was on the inside of a wrapper of a chocolate bar and it was urging me to do something else with it rather than throw it away.

“We often forget that ‘reuse’ comes before ‘recycle.’ Before tossing an item in the trash or recycle bin, consider alternative uses. This chocolate bar wrapper, for example, could be used to make gift wrap, an art project or a bookmark. For more information visit

Recycling is good. Reusing is better. Using less is best.
